I am reviving this blog again as I was very busy with other things. I want to say how happy I am now finally married to my Chinese Prince so I am now officially a YAN JIA REN.
We didn't do a fancy wedding as we have no family here in Richmond, BC but hope to do a proper wedding once we see our families again.
I want to learn Chinese soon so that when I visit his PARENTS in China I will be able to converse with them.
Let's see when we can do that..

I would love to have a traditional Chinese wedding with all the trimmings but let's see. Both of us don't drink Alcohol so we will have to sip very little wine or get the fake stuff lol.

I haven't posted here for a while due to traveling but I am back now and want to continue and build this blog up to what it used to be. I have just turned vegetarian and am enjoying many Buddhist stories about various Buddhist Saints and their exploits which are quite fascinating and one in particular Arya Avalokite is a veyr popular Bodhisattva and to the Chinese He is identified as KWAN SHI YIN PUSA, as when he came back to Earth to help everyone again he appeared to the Chinese as a girl called Miao Shan which means 'much goodness'.

Here is a lovely DHARANI that is all about Avalokite and I hope you can enjoy the music as much as I do. I have many versions of this in Chinese, Vietnamese and Sanskrit renditions and they are all lovely. There is even an upbeat disco version which has become very popular with Buddhists around the World, especially the younger ones.

Great Compassionate Heart Dharani

Du Mu, an Exquisite Chinese Poet.

One of my favourite Chinese poets has to be Du Mu. His eloquence and style sweeps me off my feet to a Land not only far away but to a place one only visits in dreams and even then quite rarely.
His other names were Muzhi Fachuang and he lived in the late Tang Dynasty where poetry in China was thriving and art in general was very much in flourishing mode. Although he held public office he never got too high up in the ranks as he had jealous enemies around him. He loved to compose lyrical poetry and pose in a romantic style.

Here is just one of his poems that will set you in a light mood.

Pure Brightness time rain disordered and confused
Road on traveler almost broken spirit

We all know that Chinese Culture is steeped not only in history but also in the deepest crevices of our imagination, full of intrigue and mystery.
In the next few blog posts I want to cover many great angles of Chinese Culture and History that have helped to shape this great nation and despite whatever naysayers would like to point out, China was and still IS a Great Nation among nations. I am not saying this out of bias or personal opinion as the facts recorded over time speak for themselves.
It isn't enough that the camps for and against China rage on..no..it is the endless souls that have passed through this culturally enriched land that will tell their story as it is with no frills or embellishments.

Don't trash the Beijing Olympics anymore.

So many people want to trash and boycott the Olympics and go on and on about Human rights before they they are fisxing what is wrong in their own back garden. At least for a few weeks we should all try to see the best in people and get on and look for real solutions to the World Problems at Large instead of always pointing the finger at China just because it has a booming economy and a large population.
I don't want to spoil the buoyant mood of the athletes in Beijing trying so hard to compete in a friendly and peaceful environment.
They can concentrate on getting rid of Gitmo at least for the next two weeks and let the rest of the World enjoy something nice and safe. There is too much ugliness in the World and finding something pretty to latch on to isn't a bad thing. If the Chinese are trying to show their best face to the world then let them. At least they are trying to create something beautiful in a troubled world.

Looking Forward to the Beijing Olympics.

I am really looking forward to the Beijing Olympics Opening Ceremony. Politics aside, it is going to be a fun, festive and full of colour celebration of the diversity and unity of Human kind. I really wish I was there but I will have to watch it from my television screen.
I love Chinese Culture as you all know, well at least the best of what China has to offer and I have a feeling that these Olympic Games are going to be beautiful as well as enchanting for all of us who wish to partake in it whether as spectators or Olympic Athletes. I wish personally every one the best for these coming days and I will be on the edge of my seat watching the games.
Let's sit back and enjoy and not let our minds get involved with the darker side of Human Nature. That does not mean though that we mustn't be vigilant at all times.

China town in London.

Despite being jet lagged after my Trans Atlantic flight from New York I decided to take my Son to China Town in London for his belated Birthday meal after a good clothes shopping escapade in the West End as he adores Chinese food and has even adopted a Chinese name he likes that he chose from an Anime Movie.
He has given himslef another a.k.a Bai Long which means white dragon and it is true his colour is as white as milk lol and so he has another name now Yan Bai Long which is my Fiance's surname and his new Chinese name..
We had some awesome crispy duck along with another four course meal and are coming back for more on Sunday as Ipromised to take him to Covent Garden to have a look around too.
China Town in London has some peng restaurants and also a great shop to get Chinese art supplies. I am thinking of stocking up on a calligraphy pen and some ink at least..

At last!I have lived to see the day that Hanfu is now selling on Ebay. For the last three years I have been waiting for this as it is difficult for me to buy from Taobao as most don't accept foreign credit cards or currency, or Paypal for that matter and I also found three dresses that I may think to buy for my wedding dress.
Yes we are thinking of the special day to be somewhere in October time and probably will take place in Canada, although I would like a wedding in China too, where my Beloved's family are stationed.
I even found a hanfu named after my superhunk hero Zhuge Liang and so I will get that for Hubby to wear as he is my Jiangjun and the Prince of my heart. Here in Chinatown, Manhattan they only sell qipao and I am saddened at this as the Hnfu is more traditionally Chinese than the Qipao. Anyway I mustn't grumble, now I can get hold of Hanfu easily I will keep you posted on my first purchase AND I will no doubt post a pic.

I have decided to stay on this blog for now as Wordpress is a bit complicated for me but doesn't matter, while I am tweaking this one I am also in the process of revamping all my blogs. I decided to stay on this template but just change the colour and found this nice header of the Great Wall that I thought might give it an organic look.
I removed a lot of rubbish from this blog and am hoping now to put in some more quality content as it was looking too shabby with all the widgets and stuff that were on here. I am going to put stuff that is more relevant to what I am wanting to write about.
I will be more busy on this blog, especially as we are now coming up to the Beijing Olympics which I wish I could have been there for, never mind I guess China has to wait for next year. I have decided now to make a new blog all about China in a more organized and categorized fashion but will still keep this one running along side it. I decided to go for Wordpress for a change and we will just see hoew it all goes. I do hope it is a success and that I get a good amount of readers coming to it. Let's see. I have learned a lot about seo lately and how I can make it a good blog and get it too be search engine friendly.
I guess we learn new things all the time. I am in Chinatown, Manhattan once again and so am enjoying getting my fresh Chinese veggies for the noodles that my Beloved likes. Let's see what we can go and cunjure up for today's meal then.

24 step tai ji in the park.

The great thing about New York is that as long as the weather holds out you can go out and do what you like, well within reason. Nice thing is that doing tai ji in the park doesn't raise eyebrows and is quite the norm here in China Town. We get up nice and early with my Beloved and go downstairs to the local park and start a round of Tai Ji. I was doing the 108 yang famly postures before and am trying to remember them once again but also joining in the simplified 24 step Tai Ji rounds which are a collection of postures makiing it a shortened version.
We do some qi gong to get the old knees cracking a bit, then some exercises then an arty fary version of the form.well until we can get it more accurate of course.
It is fun and makes me feel much healthier now. Sometimes we go down twice a day. It is well worth the exercise. I highly recommend it.

Chinese Dumplings..I love them.

I have a great love for Chinese dumplings and so today here is a lovely recipe I used and they turned out pretty awesome to say the least.

Jiaozi

Chinese dumplings (Jiaozi) are very popular during the Chinese New Year season

Ingredients:

Jiaozi dough:
3 cups all-purpose flour
up to 1 1/4 cups cold water
1/4 teaspoon salt
Filling:
1 cup ground pork or beef
1 TB soy sauce
1 teaspoon salt
1 TB Chinese rice wine or dry sherry
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground white pepper, or to taste
3 TB sesame oil
1/2 green onion, finely minced
1 1/2 cups finely shredded Napa cabbage
4 tablespoons shredded bamboo shoots
2 slices fresh ginger, finely minced
1 clove garlic, peeled and finely minced

Preparation:

Stir the salt into the flour. Slowly stir in the cold water, adding as much as is necessary to form a smooth dough. Don't add more water than is ncessary. Knead the dough into a smooth ball. Cover the dough and let it rest for at least 30 minutes.

While the dough is resting, prepare the filling ingredients. Add the soy sauce, salt, rice wine and white pepper to the meat, stirring in only one direction. Add the remaining ingredients, stirring in the same direction, and mix well.

To make the dumpling dough: knead the dough until it forms a smooth ball. Divide the dough into 60 pieces. Roll each piece out into a circle about 3-inches in diameter.

Place a small portion (about 1 level tablespoon) of the filling into the middle of each wrapper. Wet the edges of the dumpling with water. Fold the dough over the filling into a half moon shape and pinch the edges to seal. Continue with the remainder of the dumplings.

To cook, bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add half the dumplings, giving them a gentle stir so they don't stick together. Bring the water to a boil, and add 1/2 cup of cold water. Cover and repeat. When the dumplings come to a boil for a third time, they are ready. Drain and remove. If desired, they can be pan-fried at this point.

This guy has got me going lol. He has a fantastic voice and his rendition of this Chinese/Mongolian song has really inspired me to want to learn better to sing in Chinese. I really think you should take some time to listen to this beautiful song as it has made me cry.
I am thinking again of my beloved acroess the Pond who is the only person on this earth that makes me feel a sense of belongign and at home. I find Chinese dress extremely elegant and very refined. I would have loved to have lived in a time when etiquette and manners were of the utmost importance. I have always been curious to see what a Chinese wedding would look like. There are many different athnic people in China of course, each one hanging onto it's traditions or mixing and matching with new ones. I do know for one thing that Chinese like bright colours and red is always associated with auspicious occasions in China. Like Indian brides many choose red as their main colour of choice unless they are having a western style wedding which would then be white.
